Mainly due to Grub failing to boot the partition, I need a mechanism to work as root on the non-bootable partition
Run the Debian Live DVD
mkdir /target (Usually this is created by the rescue system)
mount /dev/sda8 /target
Here /dev/sda8 is my system root mount point
Now I can work on the target system as root.
